Granite Chippings (10 – 14 mm)

or 4 interest-free installments by Afterpay. More Info

These small chippings (about 7 – 10mm and 10 – 14mm, roughly ¼″ – ½″) are fine crushed granite gravels. They are granular but still have sharp angular edges.

Uses:
Decorative surfacing: Commonly used as decorative gravel in driveways, garden paths, and planting beds. Their smaller size makes them comfortable to walk on and spreads easily with machinery. They are often supplied in natural colors (grey, pink, red) that enhance landscaping.

Light-duty base or infill: For pedestrian areas or light traffic drives, 10 – 14mm granite provides a firm walking/parking surface. (In very heavy traffic areas, slightly larger grades might be preferred.)

What Are Granite Aggregates - Crushed Rock Granites

At Regimanuel Concrete Products Limited (RCP), we supply a wide range of high-quality granite aggregates sourced directly from our own quarry. Whether for construction foundations, road base layers, or decorative landscaping, our granite products are engineered to meet strict industry standards for durability, consistency, and performance.

Granite aggregates are hard, durable crushed rock products quarried from granite. They serve as high-quality construction materials because granite is one of the hardest naturally occurring stones. In practice, granite aggregate is widely used for road base and sub-base layers, concrete and asphalt mixes, drainage backfill, and decorative surfacing.

For example, granite aggregate is most used as a foundation material for roads, driveways, and building bases and its appearance makes it popular for ornamental pathways and garden features. Its angular shape and hardness give excellent interlock and load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for heavy-duty bases and longevity under traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Granite aggregates are crushed pieces of granite rock, graded into various sizes – from fine dust (0 – 7mm) up to large fragments (75 – 150mm and beyond). At RCP, our aggregates are sourced directly from our Ablekuma quarry and processed to strict quality standards. They serve as the fundamental building blocks for concrete mixes, road bases, drainage layers, and decorative landscaping.

Granite is one of the hardest, most durable natural stones. In Ghana’s tropical environment – with heavy seasonal rains and variable soils – granite aggregates provide:

  • High Load‑Bearing Capacity: Angular particles interlock to form a stable base for roads, driveways, and foundations.

  • Excellent Drainage: Even fine grades (e.g., 3 – 8mm chippings) allow water to pass, reducing erosion and avoiding pooling.

  • Long‑Term Durability: Resistant to crushing, abrasion, and weathering, ensuring structures and pavements last longer with minimal maintenance.

Granite aggregates are widely used as base and sub-base materials in construction. They serve as foundation layers for roads, driveways, and building slabs. Because granite is hard and wear-resistant, it is also added to concrete and asphalt mixes for high-strength applications. In landscaping, granite chippings are used decoratively on pathways, gardens, and driveways. Overall, granite aggregate provides a stable, long-lasting base material wherever high strength is needed.

Granite dust is finely crushed granite screened to the smallest fraction (typically 0 – 7mm). It compacts into a very dense, stable layer. It is often used as a sub-base or bedding layer under pavement, pavers, or turf. Its fine size allows good compaction and drainage: for example, crushed granite dust prevents water pooling while providing a solid base. It is also used to top capping layers or fill minor voids. Because of its stability and ease of leveling, 0 – 4mm granite dust is a popular choice for driveways, footpaths, and artificial grass bedding.

Stone base (3 – 8mm) is a graded fine aggregate used as a base course under concrete slabs, block paving, or road surface courses. It acts as a granular base layer that transfers loads to the subgrade. In practice, stone base is the fine portion of typical base/sub-base mixtures (e.g. Type 1 – 0 – 40mm crushed stone. It is commonly used in driveways and pavement sub-bases to provide a firm, compacted layer. The 3 – 8mm material fills the voids between larger stones and increases overall stability.

A medium-sized granite aggregate is often recommended for highways. A common specification is ¾ minus granite (approximately 10 – 20mm maximum size). This size packs well and provides a smooth, stable surface. Very small stones (under 10mm) may wash out, while very large stones (over 30 mm) can be uneven. Many landscapers use around 10 – 14mm or 10 – 20mm granite chippings for the top layer of driveways, often on top of a coarser sub-base. Using ¾″ minus crushed granite provides good traction and durability.

Yes. Granite’s angular shape and grading make it excellent for drainage applications. For example, washed 10 – 20mm granite chippings (pipe bedding aggregate) allow water to flow freely around utilities. Even crushed granite dust drains well enough if properly contained. The toughness of granite also means it won’t degrade when wet. In erosion-control trenches or French drains, granite chippings (often in the 20 – 40mm range) are used to maintain permeability while resisting washing out.

Granite is chosen for its hardness and durability. It is one of the hardest aggregate materials available. This means granite aggregate resists crushing under heavy loads and is frost-resistant. Its color is also aesthetic and long-lasting. For structural projects (roads, airport runways, etc.), granite’s strength makes a more durable base than softer stones. As noted by suppliers, granite’s robustness and wear-resistance make it a “reliable choice” for demanding construction.

For Ghana’s climate and tropical soils, a 75 – 150mm crushed rock sub‑base (often called “bulk fill”) overlain by 10 – 20mm granite chippings provides optimal strength and drainage. The large 75 – 150mm base layers resist rutting under Accra’s heavy rains, while the 10 – 20mm wearing course offers a smooth, load‑bearing surface. Always compact in 150mm lifts to achieve >98% Proctor density.

Use 0 – 7mm granite dust (grano dust) as the bedding layer beneath interlocking blocks. Spread a 30 – 40 mm layer, then compact with a plate compactor in two passes. The angular fines lock together, creating a firm, permeable bed that sheds water – ideal for Kumasi’s seasonal downpours.

Use the mixed‑size filling material (0 – 6 mm) to backfill utility trenches in urban areas like Takoradi. Its uniform grading ensures minimal settlement over buried pipes and cables. Compact in 150 mm layers to prevent future subsidence, especially where groundwater levels fluctuate.

Yes. 150 – 250 mm granite chippings (riprap) and 1 – 1.5 m³ boulders are ideal for riverbank stabilization along the Volta Basin and sea‑wall protection in coastal areas. Their weight and angular interlock resist scour during heavy rain events and tidal surges.

RCP’s granite aggregates comply with Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) GS CS 20:1990 for coarse aggregates and BS EN 13242 (imported best practice). Our in‑house laboratory tests for Los Angeles abrasion (<30 %), specific gravity, and grading ensure full compliance.

Wrap 10 – 20mm or 20 – 40mm chippings in geotextile membrane before placement. This retains the angular aggregate while allowing water to pass. For French drains in Tema’s high‑rainfall zones, this method prevents fine soils from clogging the drainage trench.
